1951 Ford Custom
I bought this car because it is like the first car that I owned. This car came from Denver, Colorado. The interior has been restored, the Ford-O-Matic transmission has been rebuilt, the engine compartment refurbished (not to original colors) and the exterior has been repainted.
The first car that I had was a medium green 1951 Ford Four Door Custom Sedan. It was equipped almost like this car. It had a flat head 239 cu. in. V-8 engine coupled with a Ford Motor Company Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission (this was the first year for the Ford-O-Matic Trans), no power steering and no power brakes. Both cars had the exterior sun-visor and fender skirts. This car doesn’t have the lower blocks or dual exhaust pipes for the great V-8 rumble sound that my first car had (I’m a little older now so I like them a little quieter). I had my 1951 Ford during High School. It was my means of transportation to school, to work after school, naturally dating (my wife was my girl-friend from 12th grade on), trips to Melvin’s Drive-In, the White Swan, Spur’s Drive-Ins as well as the Lincoln & Stony Brook Drive-In movie theaters. Those were the good Old Days. I still have the pictures of my girl-friend (my wife) that I had under the clear plastic cover on the center of the steering wheel.
The longest trip that I took with my 1951 Ford was to Purdue University in the summer of 1952. That was a long trip in those days for a Teenager and it was the beginning of many trips that I have taken in motor vehicles since. The Pennsylvania Turnpike was the only Expressway at that time so most of the driving was through the towns of Ohio and Indiana on US Rt. 30. Gas was only .28 cents a gallon and with a car it seemed like you could drive anywhere.
