1937 Stutz as it arrived in York from California to be restored
1937 Stutz Pakagecar (long wheel base) completely restored and ready for Showing
In 1932, Stutz Motor Company bought the Pak-Age-Car Company. The Pak-Age-Car van-truck had a four-cylinder Hercules engine that was mounted in the rear of the truck and was mounted to a rear transaxle. This engine/transaxle unit was easily removable on the slide out frame on which it was installed. These trucks were manufactured in the Connersville, Indiana factory until 1937 when the Stutz Company filed bankruptcy. The Pak-Age-Car marketing and distribution taken over by the Diamond T Company, which continued to sell the van-trucks until March 1941, when war preparations took over the Connersville plant. There are approx. 10 Pakagecar (both Stutz & Diamond T models) known to be in existence.
This 1937 Stutz Pakagecar has a long wheel base body with rear swing out-doors and was complete with all equipment and accessories. This includes the original wheels and all four hubcaps with the Stutz emblem riveted to them. There was very little rust on the body, the engine had not been operated for over 35 yearts but seemed to be in great shape. We started the restoration of this truck early 2011 and finished the restoration in time for the 2014 Show Season ..
During the 2011 Show season, Stutz Motor Company was celebrating its 100th Anniversary. Since these vehicles were manufactures in Indianapolis, along with the Marmon Cars, a special event was held at the Indy 500 Race Track Infield during the 2nd weekend of May 2011. The Indy 500 Race was celebrating its 100th Anniversary also so all three organizations combined their efforts to observe their 100th. The Stutz Club of America invited me to bring my Pakagecar to the Show because it is a rare unit and is an important part of the Stutz History.
The Truck body was only half way restored and the engine had only two miles on it since we got it running after sitting around for over 35 years. The truck was drivable but the engine had not been restored and the tires were 35 year old and wouldn’t be replaced until after the restoration was complete. After the 100th Anniversary Show was over the vehicles were invited to drive around the Indy 500 Track. I wasn’t planning to drive around the track because of the age of the tires and the engine was not rebuilt. But after seeing all the other vehicles drive onto the track, I realized that this was a once in a life time opportunity. Besides there were a lot of tow trucks sitting around the track if I had any problems. So I started up the truck and drove it the whole way around the 2.5 mile track successfully. As a matter of fact a photographer from Hemmings Magazine saw me driving around the track and took a picture of the truck. It was in the August 2011 issue article about the 100th celebration.

In addition to the Stutz Show at the Indy Race Track, The Pakagecar was taken to three other shows in 2011. They were the ATCA Macungie Show in June, The Boyertown Duryea Day Show and the Radnor Concour d’Elegence Show. After the show season was over, we started the process of finishing the truck’s restoration. This work was done between other small work projects that we had in our shop. By the end of September 2012 the truck was finished.
